There is a big difference between permanently leaving somewhere that you don't want to leave and temporarily leaving. I would say that going across the country for your internship was a great move. It got you out of your comfort zone for a while, but had it not turned out to be a pleasant experience, you could take comfort in the fact that you would be going home at the end of it.

I'm a missionary with WorldVenture, and have served as an ethnomusicologist in Mozambique for the last 2 years. Having a masters in intercultural studies with an emphasis in global christian worship through ethnomusicology, I'm now exploring additional doctoral programs in ethnodoxology/worship and the arts.

I'm wondering if Calvin Institute of Christian Worship has such a program, or can put me in touch with an institution that may. Our home base in the US is Detroit, MI.

Sincerely, Megan Meyers

So good to read Becky Hoeksema's comments. Thank you Becky, and thank you also, Deborah.

The early Church used hymns as a teaching tool as, for example, against the Arian heresy. Luther wrote and recommended the use of "didactic chorales" for similar reasons. Becky Hoeksema seems to have discovered contemporary practice and implications of this, and the implications of her discovery are important: that we take all due care with the texts we sing, lest we teach theology contrary to what we claim to espouse in our particular places.

Musical expression is not neutral, and even musical style carries subtle theological implications. For example, welcome triumphalism here is not necessarily acceptable triumphalism there. It would be interesting to read Becky's observations in that subject in some future year, though the subject is infinitely more difficult.

Thank you for your honest reflections. You raise questions that I wonder about a lot. How did other seminar members respond to your questions?

When your dissertation is published as a book, I'd love to read it. You probably know this, but Center for Transforming Mission shares your concern for who they call "the least, last, and lost." Their weekly Word from Below shares stories of looking or finding God in hard places, far from power structures. http://geographyofgrace.com/ws/resources/wordfrombelow.php

This is a very powerful essay, and it relates not just to evangelical Christians, but the problems of all religions and the constant dilemma of power and purpose. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, they were thought-provoking and fascinating.
