Wrapping up two reading groups
Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011
During the fall of 2010, the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship sponsored two sets of book groups using two of our recent publications: Worship Words, by Debra Rienstra and Ron Rienstra and Shaped by God, edited by Robert Keeley. We gathered the leaders of these book groups during summer to orient them to the books’ content [...]

How to Plan Worship that Appeals to Many Generations
Monday, September 27th, 2010
Many worship planners wonder how to plan intergenerational worship that engages people of different ages. One problem is that people often prefer the kind of worship they grew up with. Another problem is that most worshipers aren’t all that aware of what’s changed or stayed the same in 2,000 years of Christian worship. That’s why [...]

New Film “Reparando” Explores Theology of the Cross
Wednesday, September 15th, 2010
Once you start getting to know people who are suffering, you can’t help but wonder how to see God in their midst or how to explain Christ’s death on the cross as good news for them now. Joel Van Dyke, a missionary who works in Guatemala’s slums and prisons, helps urban missions graduate students flesh out [...]

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010
Twenty million people. That’s how many people live in Australia. It’s also how many Pakistanis became displaced when torrential monsoons unleashed the Indus River beyond its banks along the nation’s entire length. The mind shudders to comprehend the magnitude of help needed. Rather than resolve to not think about all those homeless hungry people, you can bring your distress [...]

Is Suffering an Essential Part of Christian Discipleship?
Tuesday, August 10th, 2010
Suffering for Christ is the main Lausanne Conversation topic for August 2010. In “To Serve Is to Suffer,” Ajith Fernando explores the paradox that measuring ministry by efficiency, numerical results, and a sense of fulfillment can make a church “ineffective in evangelism.” Fernando has been national director of Youth for Christ in Sri Lanka since 1976. The [...]

Reflections from ‘Church by the Bridge’ in Australia
Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010
From former CICW student assistant Kim Webster, who now lives and worships in Australia:
One of the most common questions I’ve gotten asked is about the differences I see between American churches and Australian churches. I must qualify immediately that, while my knowledge of American churches is vast and reasonably varied, my knowledge of Australian churches is based almost entirely on mine.
