Extending the (Seminar & Dinner) Table: Disciplinary Distinctives, Unifying Principles, Committed Engagement

Posted by Phillip Luke Sinitiere

As I suggested in a previous post, the big picture, framing question in the Congregations and Social Change Seminar is the extent to which social currents impact congregations and the extent to which congregations shape societies and cultures.  There have been and will continue to be different answers to these questions. This week we have [...]

The seminar on “Reflective Pedagogy and Christian Practices” has come to an end after two weeks. Some of the topics addressed during the second week of the seminar include the following: 1. We began the week by reflecting on the previous week, noting ideas that were important to us, ideas we want to develop more, [...]

“In the beginning…”: Congregations and Social Change

Posted by Phillip Luke Sinitiere

As I suggested in an earlier post, I am thrilled to be at academic summer camp 2011.  Today’s opening session of Congregations and Social Change consisted of routine introductions and preliminary mapping of the seminar schedule.  Yet the Introductions were anything but “routine.”  I am excited to see how all of our projects will take [...]

Layers of habitus

Posted by mjmacdonald

In the discussion of Bourdieu in Chapter 3 we spent a long time on habitus. Habits acquired through repetition, practice, and imitation of role models do not become second nature quickly or through ‘willing it to be so.’ The processes of developing not only habits but this larger habitus is multi-layered and dynamic in its [...]

Academic Summer Camp 2011

Posted by Phillip Luke Sinitiere

This past week I prepared to send my oldest child off to summer camp.  My wife and I packed his bags, sleeping gear, and wrote letters that he will receive each day.  It not only brought back memories of summer camp as a kid, it also reminded me of my first Calvin Summer Seminar–which a colleague gleefully [...]

To have access to the author, to be able to ask him why he chose to write this book, what he was thinking about when he wrote certain sections, was a real privilege. I came away with some [...]

How to Plan Worship that Appeals to Many Generations

Posted by Joan Huyser-Honig

Many worship planners wonder how to plan intergenerational worship that engages people of different ages. One problem is that people often prefer the kind of worship they grew up with. Another problem is that most worshipers aren’t all that aware of what’s changed or stayed the same in 2,000 years of Christian worship. That’s why [...]

New Film “Reparando” Explores Theology of the Cross

Posted by Joan Huyser-Honig

Once you start getting to know people who are suffering, you can’t help but wonder how to see God in their midst or how to explain Christ’s death on the cross as good news for them now. Joel Van Dyke, a missionary who works in Guatemala’s slums and prisons, helps urban missions graduate students flesh out [...]
