The mighty God summons the earth
from the rising of the sun to the place where it sets.
Our God comes and will not be silent.
God calls, and we respond to his love.
The heavens declare God’s righteousness.
We tell out God’s glories!
- call to worship for Advent, based on Psalm 50, from The Worship Sourcebook

Science and Faith in Harmony: Positive ways to include science in worship
New stars form in the arms of the Whirlpool spiral galaxy. NASA/courtesy of nasaimages.org.
What assumptions about science and faith would you expect to find among people in these settings?
- In a darkened auditorium, all eyes are on the screen where a spiral galaxy seems to look back. "This is the Whirlpool Galaxy, which is more than 22 million light years away," the speaker says. "Amazing," someone murmurs.
- The organist slides onto the organ bench, while lyrics fill the screen. The woman upfront says, "Please join me in singing ‘How Great Thou Art.’"
Would it surprise you to learn that both scenarios are from a single worship service?

What’s new for the upcoming Calvin Symposium on Worship (Jan. 28-30, 2010)?
• All worship services, plenary addresses, and publisher exhibits will be located in the Spoelhof Complex Arena at Calvin College, due to construction at the college’s Fine Arts Center.
• Three plenary addresses will be offered, one each morning.

Hymns for Worship is a unique collection of 256 hymns presented in chronological order beginning with a sampling of Old Testament psalms and continuing to the present. It’s like taking a 3,000-year journey through the songs of God’s people! This ecumenical anthology includes a rich variety of hymn tunes: from plainchant to folk tunes to historic psalm tunes and musical settings composed for a specific text. Use it to supplement your congregation’s tradition of hymnody; as an academic resource; or for personal, family, and small group devotions.
