Psalms in Worship: God knows we need help praying
Granite Springs has launched an all-church effort to memorize and recite Scripture in worship. Photo from Granite Springs Church.
What do you say to family, friends, and teammates gathered to mourn a life cut short by cancer at age 16? What comfort can you offer the grandparents who raised the young man?
The people of Granite Springs Church in Lincoln, California, knew that pious cliches wouldn’t help. So they used the words God has given us all in the Psalms, which provide a powerful vocabulary of faith.

I was sitting in a small church in the outskirts of Ulan Ude, a Russian city in Siberia just north of Mongolia, attending a consultation on Contextualized Worship for the indigenous peoples of the Siberian region. God had already pulled a few strings just to get me there and I knew it was a privilege to be with this group of Christians from the Buryat, Altai, Tuvan and Sakha peoples, as well as with missionaries from Russia, the U.S. and Europe who had been working in this region for years.
I was excited to be a part of this initial gathering and to have an opportunity to share some of what God has been doing in my own life and among our Navajo people as we have begun to ask the question of “What does it mean to be Navajo and Christian?”
